Breathwork is a powerful tool that can have transformative effects on our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. While the physical benefits of breathwork are well-known, many people are also discovering the spiritual benefits of incorporating breathwork into their practice. In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the spiritual effects of having a breathwork practice and how it can transform your overall well-being.
- Promotes mindfulness and presence
Breathwork requires us to focus on our breath and be fully present in the moment. It helps us to slow down and take a break from the constant stimulation of our modern world. By dedicating time to focus on our breath, we create a space for stillness and introspection, allowing us to become more mindful and present in our daily lives. This mindfulness and presence can help us connect with our spiritual selves and cultivate a deeper sense of awareness and connection with the world around us.
Mindfulness has been shown to reduce stress, improve cognitive function, and enhance overall well-being. By focusing on our breath and intentionally regulating our breathing patterns, we can train our minds to be more present and aware of our surroundings.
2. Releases emotional blockages
Bessel Van Der Kolok, M.D., a leading expert on trauma and author of “The Body Keeps The Score” says there are four fundamental truths that are often overlooked in by the traditional brain-disease model of therapy. One of those fundamental truths he identified is that we have the ability to regulate our own physiology, through such basic activities as breathing, moving, and touching.
He then continues on to say that when we ignore these four fundamental truths he identified, “We deprive people of ways to heal from trauma and restore their autonomy. Being a patient, rather than a participant in one’s healing process, separates suffering people from their community and alienates them from an inner sense of self.”
We can become active participants in our emotional healing journey through our breath practice. When breathwork is used in conjunction with any therapeutic approaches with licensed, trained mental health professionals, we become part of the solution-based therapies, which helps us connect to our own ability to help ourselves and our sense of inner self. Through consistent breathwork practice and working with licensed mental health professionals, individuals can learn to access and process their emotions in a healthy way, leading to greater emotional resilience, improved relationships, and a greater sense of inner peace and fulfillment.
3. Enhances spiritual growth
Breathwork can enhance spiritual growth by helping us access higher states of consciousness and connect with our inner wisdom. By quieting the mind and focusing on our breath, we can access a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us, and cultivate a greater sense of spiritual awareness and growth.
Often, our egoic brains, or monkey mind, are often very busy thinking, projecting, judging, and questioning. The egoic brain mind, as I like to call it, is the part of our mind that is the part of our inner self you probably relate to as your thoughts and who you are.
When we breath in a conscious connected way that egoic brain mind quiets because when we are completely focused on our breathing we cannot also be focused on our mind’s random thoughts. This focused breathing opens the pathway to a higher state of our consciousness. When this higher consciousness is accessed, people often experience elevated states of awareness, feelings of increased unity and oneness, they may have visions of Divine beings, receive Divine messages, as well as other experiences that result in an increase of spiritual connectivity.
4. Connects us to a higher power
Breathwork has been used for centuries as a spiritual practice in many cultures and religions. It can help us access altered states of consciousness, allowing us to connect with our inner selves and higher powers leading to a deeper sense of connection, peace, and fulfillment.
Breathwork can also be a tool for accessing deeper states of meditation, which can lead to profound spiritual experiences. As we continue to breathe intentionally, we can enter a state of deep relaxation and mental stillness, allowing us to connect with our inner selves and the divine.
For example, one such practice is Kriya Yoga. It is a form of yoga that specifically focuses on the relationship between the breath and spiritual connection. Kriya.org explains that relationship like this, “Based on the science of breath, Kriya Yoga greatly enhances all spiritual practice. The technique emphasizes the relationship between the breath and mind. The breath influences the mind and vice-versa. This reciprocal relationship reveals the secret of controlling the mind: ‘Breath control is self-control. Breath mastery is self-mastery.’ When the breath is mastered, the face of the divine can be seen.”
As a breathwork facilitator, I am always interested in expanding my own practice. I recently learned about a particular kriya. The Sudarshan Kriya, otherwise known as SKY Meditation, is a kriya that was recently brought to my awareness through The Art of Living. After learning this kriya and incorporating it into my own personal practice, I can attest that this practice focuses breath mastery and breath awareness. I love practicing breathwork, whether it be the SKY Meditation, rebirthing breathwork, or any other breathing techniques prior to my meditation as I find it deepens my meditation practice.
Conclusion
Breathwork is a powerful tool that’s been recognized and used by cultures all around the globe for centuries. It promotes mindfulness and presence, deepens our spiritual connection, releases emotional blockages, enhances spiritual growth, and connects us with a higher power and greater intelligence. Breathwork can transform our spiritual practice and help us cultivate a deeper sense of purpose, meaning, and connection with the world around us. Whether through meditation, yoga, kriyas, or other breathwork techniques, incorporating intentional breathing into our daily routine can have a profound impact on our spiritual journey.
